Avoid Deadly Poison in Your Christian Walk
Most of us wouldn’t even think about swallowing a mere 1/8 of a teaspoon of poison. Even if it were mixed with a little sugar or topped on top of our favorite dessert, we would cringe and quickly push it away from us.
Yet, so many of us are contaminated with deadly poison. James 1:8 says, “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
I’m sure at this point in life, most of us have discovered how much our tongue can get us in trouble. We can always say we’re sorry for offending someone and they may forgive us, but the permanent damage is left behind. Someone may forgive us, but the forgetting part is almost impossible.
We’ve all made mistakes; however, in letting our tongue loose at the wrong time, but we must examine ourselves our hearts to see what’s inside. Matthew 15:18 says, “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart: and they defile the man.”
Are we blessing God (seeming to be religious) and on the other hand cursing man? (James 3: 9, 10) God says “these things ought not so to be. (James 3:10b)
Just like we wouldn’t expect a fountain to bring forth both sweet water and bitter (James 3:11) neither should both things be coming from our tongue.
Have you ever met someone who one minute seemed so friendly, but on another occasion you saw him spiteful and mean-spirited, using his tongue to lash out and hurt someone? God’s Word says, “A double-minded man in unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:8) Inside there’s sort of two beings…one that may want to serve God and the other clinging to evil leaving no true victory in a Christian’s life.
The antidote for the deadly poison within…
Paul speaks about the flesh in Galations chapter 5. “But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Gal. 5:15, 16)
Let’s yield our lives to God. Daily read the Word of God and pray, asking Him to help us walk in the Spirit. Let’s daily examine ourselves within as David did in Psalms 139:23, 24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
