What’s the Best Answer for Facing Hostility?

Has someone become hostile towards you? Perhaps they’ve said some very cruel and hurtful words.

It would be nearly impossible to get through life without facing some conflict with other people. [You would literally have to live in a place of solitude — a big box all by yourself, to avoid any conflict with others.]

Because of our human nature, which tends to be selfish on it’s own and also harbors pride, people often find themselves in a heated argument or a “donnybrook.” [Yes, that’s a real word — I’m a nut for using the thesaurus or dictionary. 😉 ]

I know you’ve probably heard the saying thousands of times…

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.”

Truthfully, the best answer or reply to hostile confrontation is spoken with humility even when you weren’t in the wrong.

God’s Word says in Proverbs 15:1:

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

If you follow God’s advice, you’ll never find yourself in a yelling match to see who can outshout the other one.

The next time you’re facing conflict, and the battle is heating…ask God to help you use a soft answer.  You’ll surely come out with better results than if you had participated in stirring up anger with grievous words in return. (Words that you’ll often regret.)

By the way…. don’t accept defeat!  Try to win that person over.  You don’t have to become a doormat and let someone walk all over you… but often there may be a reason that person is out of sorts with you.

There could be another whole reason for the conflict way underneath that they’re not telling you.  So pray about it… ask God for wisdom in trying to resolve it.  Sometimes that just won’t happen…but I’d rather do my best to try saving a friendship if at all possible.

God bless your day ahead!

Thank you for this excellent reminder. Giving a soft answer is hard, but extremely effective. But with God’s power, we can do it!

No, Inez, it’s NOT easy! But, if we would do it more often than we do, I believe we’d really understand how much more God works in tough situations when we don’t interfere. 🙂
